Focus On Eternal Things

Imagine going through the day thinking more about your heavenly home and less about your earthly abode. For most, our earthly abode contains all the things we have accumulated and love. Favorite chair, couch, bed, table, and knickknacks. Maybe you are fortunate enough to have a backyard with trees, flowers, and a vegetable garden.

This abode can also contain friends, people we enjoy.

I have found that earthly things can distract me from my spiritual journey. How about you? Who doesn’t like the pleasures of this earthly life? Especially friends to share these things with. But our life isn’t about this life.

In 2 Corinthians 14:8 the Apostle Paul says, “So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (CSB) Although we know this, it is difficult to consider it. The “seen” is here and now, not so much with the “unseen.”

Our motivation can come from 1 John 2:16-17, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away and also it’s lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.”

According to Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He has planted eternity in the human heart.” Our soul knows the importance of eternity, which is why it is restless in the world today.

Finally, John addresses this in chapter 12:25, “Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity.” Put the worldly things in their place by putting your soul’s eternal resting place first.

We know eternity is real. To procrastinate is irresponsible for the life we have been given. Living superficially, without purpose other than pleasure, will not soothe the soul.

Life must be lived intentionally, and with the purpose God has in mind.

What can you do today to begin living your life with eternity in mind? Ask God for help.

Soli Deo Gloria
