Is Your Light on Dim?
Is Your Light on Dim?
Our Bible study group decided that, for a change, we would read and discuss
a new book. It details how Christ’s Church today is looking much like His
Church in Germany in the mid-thirties. When Hitler rose to power.
Then, there were only a few pastors alarmed at his power grab while the vast
majority saw no problems. The result was that the German church was co-opted by
the Nazis, giving them credibility and sway with the public. The silence of
these church pastors “voiced” what the congregants saw; “God” approving of
Hitler.
In hindsight, we see how silence in the face of evil, is evil.
In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A city set
on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a
basket, but on the lampstand, it gives light to all that are in the house. Let
your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (NASB95)
In my study Bible, an NLT version, the footnotes for these verses’ states,
“We hide our light by being quiet when we should speak, going along with the
crowd, and denying the light.”
Today, the church is facing a culture of tyranny. One in which Christianity
is being attacked for standing up against abortion, homosexuality, transgender
mutilations, socialism, and communism: Those things that are harmful to God’s
perfect creation.
Our “light” can be the opposition to this tyranny. Opposition to those
things contrary to God’s design. Standing up against un-Christian policies in
our schools, our local and national governments, and in movements that oppress
the many while enriching the “elite” few.
Isaiah 41:10 says, “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look
about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
Surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Jesus wants us to stand. Not to be afraid. To understand that the Holy
Spirit imbues us to act.
He doesn’t want you to hide your light from others.
How can you go out today shining brightly?
